Background to the conference
IMPACTS OF EXTREME WEATHER AND CLIMATE EVENTS ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA
Africa is plagued with many weather-related disasters ranging from drought, flood, food insecurity, starvation, tropical disturbances, etc. The direct and indirect consequences of these problems are starvation, war, widespread mortality and diseases, etc. Classic examples are numerous including recurrent drought and famine in the Sahara/Sahel regions as well as in the horn of Africa . The overall impacts of these extreme weather and climate events obviously affect diverse socio-economic sectors such as aviation, agriculture, fresh water, health and shelter.
This conference aims to bring together, seasoned researchers from around the world who have been working on the African Weather and Climate and the impacts of extreme weather and climate events for a focused, informed and an in-depth discussion on these issues. The conference will also provide a unique opportunity for researchers as well as others in governmental and non-governmental agencies who have been working in related sectors of the economy to review ongoing research, and proffer mitigating and adaptive strategies that would serve as proactive short- and long-term planning for the socio-economic development of the nations of Africa .
