Background to the conference

CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON

Climate change and its possible impacts on the environment and socio-economic systems now constitute the most important environmental problem facing mankind at the threshold of the 21st century.  Climate change will increase poverty and hardship, endanger food security, destabilize economies, breed insecurity in many countries and undermine our goals for sustainable development.
The 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessed the vulnerability impacts of Climate Change on all regions of the world.  Africa in that report, stood out as the most vulnerable to climate change ostensibly because of poverty, recurrent drought and our dependence on rain-fed agriculture.
it is against this background that the 2009 theme of the Nigerian Meteorology Society International Conference is “Climate Change and Sustainable Development”.  This conference aims to bring experts and seasoned researchers and academics from all over the world to discuss climate change and the danger it poses, and proffer appropriate mitigation and adaptation strategies especially for nations in Africa.
